It's a bit of a Frankenstein's monster of an iPad, with old parts and new. I'd love to see this with the new Pencil and the new USB-C port but I imagine both of those would raise costs significantly. https://t.co/mqnegDqgZs

This is what we’ve been wanting Apple to do: ship frequent, boring spec-bump updates, rather than selling ancient hardware for years and leaving us wondering if there’ll ever be an update again.

The iPad lineup makes far more sense now than when there was a $500 price gap in the middle of it, most but not all could use Pencils, the Mini was ancient, etc.
— Marco Arment (@marcoarment) March 18, 2019
Now, they’re all Pencil-able, they’re all A12 except the cheapest model, and all prices and sizes are well-covered.

At $399 and $499 for the new iPads, seems to me Apple was worried that the 9.7-inch iPad was getting people acclimated to lower prices, usually $250-299 during sales.

Today’s iPad updates flesh out and clean up the line, right some wrongs, and sweep away neglect, with the sole downside that you’ll likely pay a hefty price to get what you want.

Apple keeps creating *and extending* these arbitrary transition periods. The old Apple Pencil should be in the past. Instead we have an entire other generation with it now. This sucks for developers too who have to continue designing for old technology. Same with lightning ports.
