Stratechery by Ben Thompson [stratechery.com]
my take on the facebook announcement from yesterday is that zuck's dishonesty about why he created facebook and evasiveness about what he's thought it would be for makes it difficult for me to take seriously anything he says about what facebook is now or will be in the future

Btw @benthompson’s take is the one fb people are unofficially endorsing. https://t.co/qNygPOqEUA

In fact, what Zuckerberg announced is quite believable, precisely because it makes perfect sense for Facebook: this is a privacy cake that Facebook can have — and eat it too. >> Facebook’s Privacy Cake https://t.co/9MWEnKFVgn

"Why can Facebook deliver most of the value? Because they are still Facebook! They still have the core Facebook app, Instagram, ‘Like’-buttons scattered across the web — none of that is going away with this announcement." https://t.co/iaQ9c2bDWn

this view of Facebook is possibly correct, but also … outrageously cynical? It basically says Mark is lying to everyone to ward off regulation.

"Privacy, it turns out, is a competitive advantage for Facebook, not the cudgel the company’s critics hoped it might be."https://t.co/AwtTAXabsJ
— Nathan Taylor (@ntaylor963) March 7, 2019
And the always perceptive @benthompson notes that this is primarily a competitive play for Facebook, since merging data from WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger will help make it more difficult for regulators, and create a powerful moat https://t.co/rjhor2FRHz

i don't mean to suggest that i believe this most recent announcement is written with the intent to mislead -- it seems perfectly possible that zuck believes what he's saying! i just have no reason to believe him myself, on any level
— Max Read (@max_read) March 7, 2019
All of these can be true. It is not either/or.
— Steven ? (@stevesi) March 7, 2019
It is a huge change, no doubt.
Change is an opportunity to grow in new ways.
Adapting business/product to regulatory climate is what you’re supposed to do. https://t.co/qb4H4qPC2o

I spent a solid hour ranting about SMS /. RCS with @russellbrandom yesterday. He has written a great piece that touches on some of that, but is really about Facebook’s power play in messaging. It is a POWER PLAY, but it’s also super messy. He explains:

In the past we have both under and overestimated the impact of FB’s product introductions- newsfeed, poke, marketplaces, stories, etc.
— Kara Nortman (@karanortman) March 7, 2019
One thing’s for sure, announcements like yesterday’s should be estimated.
