Update: Apple says Core Animation frame rate bug will be fixed in future OS update. Documentation on opt-in plist key is coming soon (I dunno why it wasn’t ready last week with the RC) https://t.co/3TeYMMJWrk

Yeah. I really hope the person who answered me on the forums isn't in trouble too… Also, I hope I'm not in trouble!

I hope what was genuinely an innocent dev question didn't make anyone at Apple's Friday harder than it needed to be, and sorry if I did. I'm sure Apple will fix it. https://t.co/wBOpycyQyp

On an iPad Pro, you can request 120fps in SceneKit, and you get it. On an iPhone, it seems to be capped at 60fps.

The fact that they didn't give this to developers earlier is a perfect example of how Apple's obsession with secrecy hurts them and the market.

Interestingly, while Dice can detect the 120Hz display of the iPhone 13 Pro Max, and I’m requesting 120Hz output from SceneKit, I don’t see anything above 60Hz. Not so on an iPad Pro running the same code. I’m guessing/hoping that’s a bug… pic.twitter.com/1fsBOFig8b

Looks like there's a new API/plist key to uncork 120Hz animations on iPhone 13 Pro for apps! `CADisableMinimumFrameDurationOnPhone`: https://t.co/Ax2EyxP4rp
— Christian Selig (@ChristianSelig) September 24, 2021
I can only get it working with CADisplayLink and SceneKit though, still doesn't seem to work with UIView/CALayer.
Wow, bonkers… is this doc’d anywhere and do you think it would survive app review?
— Chad Etzel (@jazzychad) September 24, 2021
Isn’t it dynamic though? I thought from the demos they said the frame rate adjusted as needed.
— James Lee (@picsbyjameslee) September 24, 2021
Right? Was legitimately just trying to find an answer but things go places you didn't think they would. ;_; And Apple's really good about this stuff so I don't think there's much reason for concern.
— Christian Selig (@ChristianSelig) September 24, 2021
This is a really weird situation and still not 100% sure if it’s a bug or intentional — but on iPhone 13 Pro most animations in third-party apps are limited to 60Hz, and iOS seems to specifically exempt Apple’s apps from this limit. https://t.co/QuwkO3ABO7

There is a workaround for the 60fps frame rate cap on iPhone 13 Pro. Set CADisableMinimumFrameDurationOnPhone to true in your Info.plist.https://t.co/LO5Cvbr4bq pic.twitter.com/dq4RTamAil

Am I correct in seeing that UIView.animateWithDuration APIs aren't clocked at 120Hz on iPhone 13? On UIScrollView, system ones, and Metal by the looks of it, rest is still 60Hz? pic.twitter.com/t3MeM9cj0E
— Christian Selig (@ChristianSelig) September 24, 2021
Oddly still not automatic. Developers will need to update their apps. https://t.co/A5dVBmTLVv

https://t.co/7LLx7PqeAU
