For water resistance on the Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3, Samsung is using new, thicker double-sided tape to help accommodate for the movement of the screen as it opens and closes. It has special lubricant on the hinge, too. pic.twitter.com/ciwPRQD4CN

I had a chance to talk to some senior Samsung engineers about ways they’ve improved durability for folding phones. It’s new plastics, new alloys, special tape, and a dab of very clever goo.

All the details:https://t.co/YkOlrsnhJo pic.twitter.com/z0jhkQzHVR
Samsung also has Cured-in-Place Gaskets (CIPG) around the flexible ribbons that connect the two sides. Basically it puts some goo in liquid form, lets it cure, and that seals it while still allowing the cable to move in multiple directions as the phones fold. pic.twitter.com/sMphrQ8b2k

There a new, branded (and patented) aluminum alloy Samsung calls "Armor Aluminum." It claims it's harder and more rigid than 7000-series aluminum. pic.twitter.com/PMlefitmfY

Here's @backlon on how Samsung tackled the durability problem in its latest folding phones. Goo! https://t.co/aQLSa4CcRj
— nilay patel (@reckless) August 11, 2021
It's a lot. Is it enough to make these phones durable enough to not feel delicate? Enough to bring folding phones into the mainstream, Samsung stated goal? TBD! But for what are essentially iterative updates, Samsung put in more work than I expected.https://t.co/YkOlrsnhJo

Onto the Z Flip3. Again, like Z Fold 3, big improvements over its predecessor, removing objections with improvements:
— Patrick Moorhead (@PatrickMoorhead) August 11, 2021
-4x larger cover screen
-improved processor (all Qualcomm 888)
-more durable
-lower price $999
-more optimized apps
-auto framing#SamsungUnpacked pic.twitter.com/sZQFTFaBsp
The Z Flip 3 is $999. A new folding phone at that magic $1000 price point is a big deal. Samsung's goal is to make foldables just another mainstream option. To get there it needed durability and price figured out. Progress made on both today. Will it be enough? pic.twitter.com/vOH4Ub4r0c
— Dieter Bohn (@backlon) August 11, 2021
The Z Fold 3 thas an under-display selfie camera. The screen covers it, but don't think it's perfect. It's neat, but there's still a visible dot there. @chriswelch has a great photo of it. pic.twitter.com/RRrcIzw0Nd

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 3 is officially here, and it comes with S Pen support, water resistance, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888, 12GB of RAM, and much more. Here's @chriswelch with all the details: https://t.co/OwaJCePLtO pic.twitter.com/5INc8Wwr6l

You can dock the taskbar permanently on the side of the screen to make it a slightly more tablet-y experience. As with earlier Folds, using it in landscape is more likely to give you a tablet interface inside apps. pic.twitter.com/fp14d60pdH

All this waterproofing -- new tape and new ways to seal around the flexible ribbons between screens and the new screen protector.... I am just going to go ahead and guess that @iFixit is going to have THINGS TO SAY about third party repairability on the new Z Fold and Z Flip.

It’s been a busy few days!

And the Z Flip 3, which is the Samsung foldable I’m even more excited about. Something about it just feels really good: https://t.co/WSCU04GWNh pic.twitter.com/CHfdSvR2WI
look here Microsoft, taskbar on the side is nice for tablet form factor.... https://t.co/kmikhMCf5w

For stylus support, Samsung didn't end up using a folding digitizer. Instead there are two of them, acting as one. An algo handles the gap between them. The S-Pen is softer, retractable, and that's how it shouldn't mar the screen. Big "We'll need to see in the review" energy here pic.twitter.com/1phUSsZSEf

Samsung just keeps chipping away at Z Fold, removing objection after objection by improving on the #ZFold3:
— Patrick Moorhead (@PatrickMoorhead) August 11, 2021
-durability
-brighter display
-better processor (all Qualcomm 888)
-under-display cam
-pen
-apps
-lower price#SamsungUnpacked pic.twitter.com/nRKaSZ2Ds6
I thought it'd be easier to add pen support to the Z Fold3. It isn't. Two sensors working with Wacom. New, rubber tip, too. Gorilla Glass Victus. I can see #Note users jumping all over this, even with the price delta. #SamsungUnpacked pic.twitter.com/wS64L09Sx8
