Microsoft makes biggest acquisition since LinkedIn...to buy Nuance Communications for $56 per share in cash...worth about $16 billion...

Nuance is perhaps best known for its voice recognition technology that goes into things like Apple Siri.https://t.co/QZx7RpDJba$MSFT $NUAN
Microsoft is going to own the Dragon voice products. I always thought it was one of the industry's bigger tragedies that Dragon Systems founders Jim and Janet Baker sold their company to an outfit that then collapsed under the weight of its own fraud. https://t.co/6wWsekaDRR

AI is technology’s most important priority, and healthcare is its most urgent application. Together with @NuanceInc, we will put advanced AI solutions into the hands of professionals to drive better decision-making and create more meaningful connections. https://t.co/ipdP6qZTx9

Worth noting: Nuance was originally spun out of @SRI_Intl, which quietly has pioneered much of web tech (and more) for 75 years now.

Younger viewers... yes, Siri came from Nuance.
Older viewers: Doug Engelbart, behind "The Mother of All Demos" was a key SRI researcher. https://t.co/E2L4CkR5wq
Interesting as Microsoft sunsets Cortana on mobile. Nuance makes Dragon Naturally Speaking, the premiere voice-to-text application https://t.co/kgwFj453Zw

Microsoft's acquisition of Nuance seems like speech recognition as the means to the ends of healthcare & other customer experiences instrumented for optimization. Less about understanding the words, more about understanding the broader contexts. https://t.co/gHmAhCvZPD pic.twitter.com/1uDbUcRPFt

Microsoft literally has a building here (Tech Center) in MA next to Nuance, so not too surprising that the companies have become so close that an acquistion would happen. https://t.co/4yCHNKwdBz

Not sure if there’s any Nuance tech left in Apple products, but if so, I think they’re way less dependent on it than they once were.
— Harry McCracken (@harrymccracken) April 12, 2021
I don't see this as Microsoft specifically buying Nuance's Dragon speech tech. Instead, Nuance's market-specific, purpose-built speech/AI solutions (healthcare, for example) seems very complementary to Microsoft's enterprise ambitions.

Once upon a time, Nuance was called ScanSoft. I happened to be visiting on the day in 2001 when it bought failed voice technology giant Lernout & Hauspie at a bankruptcy auction, its first move into voice. https://t.co/RAptJFQWRA

Nuance's speech tech patent portfolio is prohibitively expansive, not that DoJ/FTC would care, obviously.
