Big news from Google: the Play Store cut is shrinking, down to 15% for a dev's first $1M in annual revenue. It follows Apple's similar App Store commission reduction, though Google's is more generous in that every dev is eligible for first $1M. https://t.co/0z6Rle0BDQ

I wish Apple would take the “15% on first 1 mil, 30% after that” approach, like a progressive tax system. Less awkwardness as you transition from <1mil to >1mil (where you have to hit ~1.2mil to earn the same as .99mil 15%->30%).

please let 30% die as a standard, the risk devs take making a game is worth so much more than 70% of their own revenue

It's a self-serving gambit: the far majority of developers will get this new 15% rate and thus be less inclined to fight, but the far majority of *revenue* is in apps with the 30% rate. So Google and Apple can continue to inflate prices and fleece consumers with their app taxes.

This seems hugely positive, especially for small studios who are the most vulnerable, where a 25% increase in early revs can be a life and death difference.
— Robert Zubek (@rzubek) March 16, 2021
In comparison, Apple and Steam cut is 30%.
(Steam does have a lower tier, but only for big studios.) https://t.co/VrYF4FzwmQ

Because the App Store is the key to everything else. Winning against Apple, even in the court of public opinion, will result in meaningful change across the industry https://t.co/0Qsu4E0dLo
Goes to show just how much more important services revenue is to Apple vs Google. (Will be interesting to see if they create rules like Apple’s around transferring apps to avoid going over $1M) https://t.co/Wga7NpmR42

Great news, and this is how Apple should’ve done it.

(First $1M is taxed at 15% for everyone, big and small, automatically.) https://t.co/QYqaNDFTxG
It's scary for the tech industry to that see Google and Apple aligning their monopolistic policies in near lock-step. In a free app market, rates would be much lower for all due to competition, and not subject to their divide-and-conquer tactics.

Google’s Play Store is matching Apple’s 15 percent cut for developers — but with a big change. Instead of only applying to devs with <$1M in annual revenue, Google’s fee reduction is for the first $1M in revenue for ALL developers, no matter how big. https://t.co/uBBzgcktce pic.twitter.com/sk56qXWJ50
