SXSW RIP

Massive economic loss for the city of Austin
There’s no way Sxsw was happening. A bit late for cancelation but not surprising.
— Arnold Kim (@arnoldkim) March 6, 2020
Cancelling SXSW represents about $350M in lost revenue for the city of Austin. This is an enormous act of civic responsibility. https://t.co/LeF4uY99Qw

Our community's health is our number 1 priority. Here's an important message regarding upcoming competitive gaming events in the wake of COVID-19: https://t.co/0lsiRHYxUW
— Electronic Arts (@EA) March 6, 2020
This is important. I think a lot of people outside of the industry view SXSW as a largely corporate event, but *so many* regular, working people organize their whole year around this one week and depend on it for a large proportion of their incomes. https://t.co/ARowHpq673

Just happened. Hate thinking there’s going to be a major domino effect from this in the US. But I’m thinking it.... https://t.co/p3Z1ImDN8v

Unfortunate, but understable action from EA. However why not keep qualifiers for FUT Cup VI, and expand the tournament to 64 players with the prizepool combined from the cancelled event? https://t.co/aYOPwLLH7t
— Jesper "Pilm" Prang (@JesperPilmPrang) March 6, 2020
SXSW started in 1987 as a local music festival expected to draw only 150 folks. It drew 700 its first year and exploded in popularity, arguably becoming one of the biggest things that really put Austin on the national map.
— Charlotte Clymer ?️? (@cmclymer) March 6, 2020
For the first time, it's been canceled. Coronavirus. https://t.co/YY3kzN9xKN
How rad would it be if @questlove did a fundraiser show for folks who are now #SXSWorried after losing out on wages without #SXSW #SXSW2020 ? https://t.co/MWWfQgWbve

#SXSW brings in more than 300 million dollars to Austin, Texas. The fact the mayor cancelled it reflects both responsibility and the potentially severe virality of #CoronaVirus. Trump cut the CDC budget. He has Pence in charge. We don't have enough testing kits. Lord.

SXSW canceled just as we're shipping pages with a story about how organizers refuse to cancel SXSW. A real STOP THE PRESSES moment here.

These are going to be liquidity constrained people who’ll have to pull back spending.
And it’s gonna be service & hospitality workers in every world city.
The economic impact of cancelling #SXSW alone shows just how difficult the decision must have been. #coronavirus https://t.co/rFxHL4hNc1

SxSW is cancelled. To try to understand what it took for China to slow the spread after they covered up and delayed for weeks, imagine closing down practically the whole country. It will take two, three months of such drastic action to contain it. We’re now in similar denial. https://t.co/YcV8PjuQAm
